It's All Mental

Oct 15, 2019

I am coming to you today from Atlanta, while attending a conference for female podcast hosts. Yesterday, I arrived early and decided to visit the Civil and Human Rights Museum which left me very emotional. What I saw hit home for me on many levels and I wanted to talk openly with you about my experience on today’s Mental Note.

While reading through the Jim Crow Laws I began to realize that because of my descent it is unlikely that I should even be here. I am a descendant of one of this country's founding fathers, Patrick Henry. His great-niece, Polly Skaggs, was my great, great grandmother and mother of my great grandfather. She was white, his dad was mulatto, and he was a mulatto child.

During those times mulatto children were taken from their homes and put into somewhat of a state facility. The issues that my ancestors faced broke my heart and made me reflect on the very real issues that we still face today. This is a difficult conversation to have but one that we must face.

My visit took a lot out of me yesterday, but I wanted to share it with you and hear about places you have visited or experiences you have had that have deeply moved you. Please drop us a line at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com and share with us your experiences.
